The Bible Society recently participated in a special prayer gathering alongside Sudanese refugees living in Cairo, Egypt. This event marked the first day of a coordinated series of prayer meetings dedicated to Sudan, the Sudanese Church, and churches across the Middle East affected by ongoing conflict.
A Community-Led Initiative
The prayer series is an initiative of five Sudanese pastors who fled the war in Sudan and are now ministering among refugee communities in Cairo. These pastors, representing five Sudanese refugee churches, came together to form an organising committee responsible for leading the prayer movement.
The General Secretary for the Bible Society of Sudan , Ismail Kanani was appointed secretary of the organising committee, helping coordinate logistics and communications.
Hosted by the Presbyterian Evangelical Church of Egypt
The first prayer meeting was hosted by the Presbyterian Evangelical Church of Egypt, which opened its doors to welcome the Sudanese congregations and visiting partners. The gathering brought together believers from different backgrounds, uniting around shared faith and a shared longing for healing, peace, and restoration.
Purpose of the Prayers
The prayer gatherings have two main focuses:
- Praying for Sudan – including peace, protection, and comfort for families caught in the conflict, and strength for the displaced communities.
- Praying for the wider Middle East – especially the churches and communities experiencing the effects of war in the region.
The organisers have scheduled the prayer meetings to take place three times, each hosted in a different location where Sudanese refugees are currently staying. This approach allows for more participation and ensures that prayer reaches communities across the city.
International Encouragement
During the first gathering, a Korean prayer group joined the meeting to stand in solidarity with the Sudanese believers. Their presence added a spirit of global fellowship, encouragement, and unity, reflecting the truth that the Body of Christ extends beyond borders.
Bible Society Participation
The Bible Society’s involvement highlights its continued commitment to walking alongside vulnerable communities, promoting hope through Scripture, and supporting churches working with refugees and families affected by conflict.
As the prayer meetings continue in the coming weeks, the Bible Society will remain engaged, listening, supporting, and standing with those praying for peace in Sudan and across the Middle East.
