Urgent Appeal for Sudan: Six Months of War Leave Bible Society in Desperation

  • Church buildings are being targeted
  • Bible Society in Sudan scattered but continues ministry
  • Funds needed for salaries and rent
  • One translator missing

Six months of war resulted in six million refugees and widespread destruction, according to the United Nations report. 2.5 million internally displaced people are seeking refuge in safer areas around the country while another 4 million international refugees have crossed the Sudanese borders to the neighbouring countries.

Despite international mediation efforts, the war shows no signs of abating, with the capital city of Khartoum and the Darfur region being the primary battlegrounds.

Amid this chaos, the Christian community is experiencing severe hardships. The Bible Society in Sudan has reported that at the beginning of this month, some church buildings were bombarded because fighters were suspected of using these buildings as hiding places. One of the historical Evangelical Presbyterian Church was severely affected on 1 November.

Bible Society in Sudan – Ministry Updates

The Bible Society in Sudan (BSS) faces numerous challenges as a result of the ongoing conflict.

The UBS colleagues from the Bible Society in Sudan are scattered across the country and some have fled abroad. Despite their difficult circumstances, they persist in their ministry.

Their main focus is on the Trauma Healing programme for Sudanese refugees in Egypt where more than 350,000 Sudanese now reside. The staff also attended the Audio Trauma Healing Pilot Training which was organized by the Bible Society in Egypt in June in Cairo. Afterwards, the BSS staff was able to conduct three training sessions for the Sudanese who were affected by the ongoing conflict.

Bible Society in Sudan – Staff Updates

The Bible Society in Sudan desperately needs financial support to cover the living expenses of its team.

  • All the 12 translators and their families are well and safe. They are in daily contact with the General Secretary. However, the Bible Society is in desperate need of new funding to cover their salaries. These individuals are essential for the organization’s work, and urgent funding is required.
  • The translators living now in Halfa were evicted from their homes as they were not able to pay the rent. Emergency funds were provided via GMT and they are now in new accommodation.
  • Musa Kodi, the team leader of the Otoro translation project, has arrived from Nuba Mountains to Juba in South Sudan. Bible Society in Sudan is considering relocating him and his team back to Sudan soon. However, the whereabouts of Mr Simon Barica, a member of the Otoro team, are unknown.
  • Ms Rawada the accountant of the Bible Society in Sudan has just moved with her family from Port Sudan to Addis Ababa Ethiopia, where her husband was relocated by his organization.

Ismail Abdelrahman Kanani, General Secretary of Bible Society in Sudan describes these challenging times: “I think this is the most difficult time I have experienced since I started working with Bible Society in Sudan. I am trying to connect all the staff from different locations, some in the country and others from abroad. Our ministry is facing two major challenges: the internet connection and the transfer of salaries to all these different locations. We don’t know when the war will end and even when it does, what the new post-war reality will look like. So, we try to adapt to the new circumstances and continue to do our ministry. People still need the message of hope provided by the Scriptures.”
